The blinds are done!!!! :D :D :D

I finally have window coverings again yaaaaay~! Extremely helpful in this fucking weather, and hopefully ifwhen I make more it'll go much more quickly. Yes. >:

We also went to a bunch of bathroom shops again, looking for stuff. We maybe decided on a few things? But ugh, so much of what you can get right now is Extremely Trendoid, and Less Functional. :/ :/ :/

Grumbling about showers, as an example of such. )

Tonight I'm up later than I meant to be because I'm on a tab-closing quest! So I can hopefully have firefox eat less goddamn ram! I've actually closed a couple of windows, so I think it's going pretty well so far...

Science Newsfrom research organizations

Scientists discover vast hidden structure beneath Antarctica’s ice.

A giant fan-shaped network of hidden basins has been discovered beneath East Antarctica, revealing that several well-known subglacial features are actually part of one massive geological structure. The finding sheds new light on Antarctica’s ancient tectonic history and could help scientists better understand how the ice sheet behaves today

Confusion and ‘More Chaos’ as States Implement SNAP Food Restrictions

Five states have already implemented bans on soda and candy through federal food assistance programs, with over a dozen more set to take effect this year.

Abusing poor people is popular.

The real aim is not to make people eat healthier foods, but rather to discourage people from using assistance programs. The benefits are not free, but cost a significant amount of time and energy to obtain. If they are stingy and/or restrictive, then it quickly becomes a waste of resources to chase after that pittance. Nobody wants to have to make a separate trip just for the food stamp shopping, let alone struggle to figure out what is "allowed" only to get stopped at the register because items are rejected. People will buy worse food with cash which can purchase anything, or go to a food pantry.

If the government really wanted people to eat healthier foods, then it would subsidize things like spinach instead of sugarcane. Another good approach would be buying healthy foods in bulk to distribute through programs or food pantries. It's not that difficult; people just don't choose to do it.

A New York Cemetery Was Hiding Over 5 Million Burrowing Bees, One of the World’s Largest Concentrations

At roughly 5.5 million, a colony of ground-nesting bees that scientists discovered under a New York cemetery may be one of the largest bee aggregations ever documented.

Subsequent research showed that the bees have likely lived there for more than 100 years, thriving in the cemetery’s undisturbed sandy soil—an incredible discovery

Today is mostly sunny and warm.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I sprayed weeds in the prairie garden.

Black raspberries are ripening.  Blackberries have green fruit.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I potted up the giant African marigolds.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I watered the patio plants and barrel garden.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a fox squirrel.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I picked a handful of black raspberries along the edge of the prairie garden.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- I watered the new picnic table garden.

EDIT 6/4/26 -- After sunset, we went out skywatching.  We saw Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury in a line. \o/

At least 2 bats were out tonight, skimming along the edges of the yard and up the driveway.  There were more fireflies, surprising given how dry it's been recently, but I am happy to see them.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Stardew! And sewing.

Sooo I slept in pretty late (protip: if someone is going to probably-accidentally lovingly harass you into getting up via slightly-too-loud music, Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a pretty damn good choice. Even if it is now stuck in my head), and played Stardew with Azaria for uh. Several hours!

By the time we were done it was a liiiittle late to go cut the two bottom bars I still need to cut, so the blinds aren't done yet. >>;; I DID sew the guide-cats onto the biggest blind, though, which took WAY more time than I expected. It's not like they're hard to attach? Or that much work?? But it still took at least an hour, probably more like an hour and a half. What even.

I probably would have pushed it a bit more and tried to at least sew the bottom hem-pockets as well, I can use the one from the completed blind for that, but we're planning on going out to another bathroom supply shop tomorrow morning, so I am attempting to get to bed uh. Earlier. And hey, it's almost three hours earlier than yesterday, that's something... :D???

Day TWO of missing work because of a migraine. Which, of course, in addition to being  a horrible experience now comes with a side of anxiety and paranoia about job security. Sure, Brain Raccoons, let’s do that.

Last night was the “The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only” concert in NYC, and every image or video snippet from it is amazing. Sam Reid truly has been possessed by the spirit of Lestat.  Not being at the concert is going to be a regret for the rest of my life, which I KNOW is a small, inconsequential thing to regret when balanced against everything else going on, but … I’ve been waiting for something like this since I was a teen, so of course it stings.

However, I’m very lucky in that a friend with media news connections went and picked up some swag for me!

The internet peaked in 2008

The year is 2008. You don't know it yet, but the internet will never again be as accessible, searchable, interoperable, or durable as it is right now. Profit motive, the tragedy of the commons, and malicious self interest are beginning to conspire to erode all of the best parts of the online world, and it will only get worse from here. Here are some of the highlights of your regular online experience that the people being born today won't even realize were taken from them:

Aaaaand now I'm homesick again.

Today I went to Bunnings (Mama drove, which was nice, she wanted to see if she was able to do it yet. Thankfully yes!), and eventually settled on a type of bracket. Unfortunately there weren't any that came in single versions, so I also had to learn how to use the angle grinder so I could split it up - but hey, now I know how to use the angle grinder! :D And after that my father and I figured out how to bend it so it's the right shape, and then I put them up! And now all my blinds are hanging up!!!! :D :D :D

Still have to do the bottom weight and string up two of them but!!! Now I CAN do that! Figuring out where exactly the bottom weight needs to be placed is very much recommended to be done once it's hanging, so! Job for tomorrow, though, yes.

Anyway other than that uhhhh. Not much. Something something brains something something - seriously, they're just being a butt with the zoning out, likely because I've been working them hard figuring out How To Do The Thing. Anyway that's how accidentally five-fucking-thirty-am, whoops. =_=

AI search tools may be stripping the internet of its humanity

There’s something that happens when you ask a question on the internet and get a clean, confident answer back in seconds.

It feels like progress. You got what you needed without wading through a dozen blog posts, forum threads, and personal testimonials of varying quality.

A new study from University of California, Riverside (UCR) suggests that what gets filtered out in that exchange is more significant than it might seem.

Moreover, as AI systems take over more of how we find information online, the web may be quietly losing something it took 25 years to accumulate.

Using AI to find a list of links to human-made resources is fine. Using AI to generate "answers" is no better than using a Ouija board to ask random spirits for advice. AI answers can't cite their sources so they are useless.

Everglades Restoration Project Ongoing for 20-Plus Years Sees Huge Rewilding Success

A huge area of the Everglades that was drained in an attempt to convert it to suburbia has been restored to a somewhat native ecosystem after 2 decades of reverse-landscape engineering.

Picayune Strand is a big, almost perfect rectangle of south Florida wetland located northwest of Everglades National Park, northeast of Thousand Islands Nat. Wildlife Refuge, and west of Florida Panther Nat. Wildlife Refuge.
